Oak Drumsticks
Oak is the densest of the three woods we work in, and it dents and wears markedly slower. If your sticks are dying at the shoulder in a fortnight of hard playing, oak is the honest answer and it is the reason it exists in the category at all.
The trade is real and physical. A denser, stiffer stick has less internal damping, so more of the impact travels back into the hand, the wrist and the elbow. Over a long set that is fatigue, and for some players it is more than fatigue. We say so before you buy a hundred pairs for a program.
Oak is also heavier for its dimensions, so an oak stick cut to the same numbers as a hickory one plays differently: more power, less finesse, slower on fast passages. Where somebody wants oak’s durability without the extra mass, we will usually recommend a slightly smaller diameter rather than the same numbers in a heavier wood.
